Fall 2006 – Ray LaMontagne, Mason Jennings, Andrew Bird, Beck, The Killers, Mindy Smith, The Kooks, Keane, The Sounds
Here are the cds I listened to last fall:
Ray LaMontagne – Till the Sun Turns Black
- Deep throated soul done just right. It doesn’t get any better than “Three More Days” and “Barfly.”
Mason Jennings – Boneclouds
- New Folk from Minnesota. Honest with catchy melodies. ”Jackson Square” will stick with you.
Andrew Bird – And the Mysterious Production of Eggs
- Haunting Pop from a master violinst. His whistling sounds like he’s playing the saw. Andrew Bird is this generation’s Sting.
Beck – The Information
- How many times can a person reinvent themselves and their music? “Cellphone’s Dead” has some of the most incredible mixing I’ve ever heard.
The Killers -Sam’s Town
- New Wave artists turn toward more rock-centered ballads on this album. Just as good as their last one.
Mindy Smith – Long Island Shores
- Strong and soothing bluegrass that doesn’t always have to sound like bluegrass. Great voice.
The Kooks – Inside In / Inside Out
- Quirky yet solid pop rock.
Keane – Hopes and Fears
- They’re always compared to Coldplay – but that’s because they’re that good. They don’t use guitars though - only pianos.
The Sounds – Dying to Say This to You
- Swedish punk-pop outfit that will get your adrenaline pumping.
